Foster gave me an ultimatum so from now on my tutorials will be written in Corel 9! I fought upgrading when everything was going so smoothly for me in Corel 7, but I'm finding things aren't too much different in CorelDRAW 9. PhotoPaint 9 is a different situation, so this tutorial will only be in CorelDRAW 9. Hopefully I can give you some new tips and tricks that will make working in CorelDRAW easier.

The flowers in this picture are all from the Plant Symbols. No numbers on the Symbols in Corel 9 so you will have to look at my diagrams to find them. If you are seeing all the Text Fonts when you open the Symbols Docker, click on the arrow to the right of the True Type Symbol box (Plants) and uncheck the True Type Fonts and the Type 1 Fonts and you will only get the Symbols. Remember to Break Apart your Symbols to work on them and Group them after you have finished.

In Flower 1 you can get some practice in node editing. Delete the stem and the center circle and bring the petals all in towards the center. Adjust the sides of the petals so they look good. Group the petals. Flower 1 is filled with a Custom Radial Fountain Fill with a light yellow in the center and gold on either side and a light gold outline. It is then duplicated and mirrored. Then duplicate it again and holding the shift key down, shrink the flower a little. Duplicate that one and mirror it again. Now you should have a nice fluffy looking flower. Group it again and make a duplicate and change the color to make the pink one. Do the same for the purple one. When you start putting your flowers together in your picture, you can stretch them horizontally and vertically to change their shapes a bit.

In Flower 2, cut the leaf from the stem. Then cut the flowers from the stem. Fill the stem with green and node edit the stem so it is stretched down a bit. Fill the flowers, which look like Lilly of the Valley to me, with a Linear Fountain Fill from light green to a darker green and a lighter green outline. Group it.

In Flower 3, again cut the stem from the flower and fill with green. Fill the petals with a Gradient Fountain Fill in shades of rose. Put a rose outline on them. Group it.

In Flower 4, fill the inside petals with a gold color and the outside with a Radial fountain fill going from a very dark brown to a gold shade a little darker than the petals. Run the Edge pad up to 25. Duplicate and mirror it. You might want to rotate the top one a little bit so the petals look better. I like the new palette where you have many shades of the color to choose from. Too bad Corel didn't add that feature to the Fountain Fills. You might want to move the center of the Fountain Fill a little bit.

Flower 5 is done the same way as Flower 4 using shades of rose and pink. Flowers 4 and 5 have no outlines.

Leaves 1 and 2 have no outlines and the stem on Leaves 1 has been stretched by node editing. They have also been duplicated and mirrored. You may want to stretch the stem on Leaves 2 later.

Next is a simple way to make a vase. Start with a nice sized oval. Do it on a new page and center it in the page. Add a horizontal line through the center of the vase. Now draw a rectangle overlapping the oval lining it up with the oval. Vase 1. Weld the two objects together. Vase 2. Add another guideline where the top meets the bottom and activate the snap to guidelines. Slide the nodes towards the center evenly from both sides. You may need to adjust the nodes on the bottom part of the vase to get a nice rounded shape. Fill it with a Radial Fountain Fill of Moss Green on the outside and !0 Cyan and 5 black on the inside and a light blue green outline. Move the center of the vase down a little bit in the Radial Fountain Fill. Vase 3. Cut and paste your vase into your picture.

Place your flowers with some above the vase and some overlapping the front of the vase. Stretch the stems on the tulips and leaves down so that they are in the vase. If you need to add a stem to a flower, use the Artistic Media Tool Docker and draw it in. Group the stem and the flower. Play with the arrangement moving and rotating the flowers and leaves until they look good.

I like to have visual shortcuts on my Corel drawing page. It makes it so much easier to navigate through a picture. I am used to my palette being on the bottom so I moved it there. The figure at right shows some of my shortcut icons. You can set up some shortcut icons by going to Tools, Options, Workspace, Customize, and Toolbars. You have to dig to find the icon you want. If for instance, you want a shortcut icon for something under Arrange and Order, click on the plus sign next to Arrange and then Order. I find the In Front Of and Behind icons very handy. You will get a drop down menu and click on the one you want. It will be highlighted in the group on the right of your page. Next drag it to your Corel page. Carefully drag it to an empty space on the left below your tools. Be sure to click the OK button before you close your Option screen. You can add as many as you want before you close your Option screen. If you run out of space, Corel will add another area for them. I also have added some Docker icons and put them at the top of my screen. I'm sure there are other ways to do this, but this works for me.

Your flowers should be nicely arranged in your vase similar to the image at left. Next we are going to make them look like they are in water! If you have grouped your flowers you will have to ungroup them just enough to be able to click on the vase. Click on the vase, Duplicate it and bring it to the front. Click on the Interactive Transparency Tool in the Tool Box. Up at the top, click on Uniform in the drop down box. Leave the slider number at 50. It will automatically change. Click on the flowers, which should not have stems on them, and bring them to the front as shown at right. Group everything.

Center your flowers in the drawing page. Then draw an oval over the flowers and center it to the page. The fill is Aztec Cave Drawings in Samples 7 under Texture Fill. You will probably want to click on Options in the Texture Fill page and change the dpi to 300 and the pixels to about 2048 and click OK. I clicked on the Preview a few times to get that particular pattern. You could also change the colors. Put it to the back if you haven't already done that.

On the Pen Docker, make the outline of the oval about 20.160 and a dark red color (I liked the nice simple numbers in Corel 7 better!) Duplicate that outline but this time make it hairline and pink. With the pink outline still picked, pick the red outline and Blend the two with the default setting. Group everything.

It looks nice just like that, but I thought a rectangle behind it with a Midnight Velvet from Samples 7 in the Texture Fills changed to shades of green would set the flowers off a little bit more.

I hope Foster will let me put a little disclaimer in here. I learn by doing and I may be wrong! You can also Print this tutorial.
