was the first Prime Minister of Independent India who held charge continuosly for 17 years from 15th August 1947 to 27th May 1964.Pandit Nehruji was born in Allahabad on 14th November 1889. He died on 27th May 1964 during his tenure as the Prime Minister of India.

Mr. Nanda had been the interim Prime Minister on two occasions;
(1) after the sudden demise of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, from may 27, 1964 to June 9, 1964, for 14 days, and
(2) after the sudden demise of Mr.Lal Bahadur Shastri, from January 11 to 24, 1966 for a perio.d of 14 days.
Mr.Nanda was born in Sialkot, now in Pakistan on 4th July 1898 and died on January 15, 1998, when he was running 100 years of age.

Mr. Shastri was the Prime Minister of India from 9th June 1964 to 11th January 1966. Mr.Shastri was born in Moghalsarai, Varanasion 2nd October 1904. He died on 11th January 1966 at Tashkent in USSR, while negotiating peace talks with Pakistan.

Mrs.Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India from 24th January 1966 to 24th March 1966. Again she was the Prime Minister of India from 14th January 1977 to 31st October 1984. Mrs. Gandhi has been the only lady Prime Minister of India. Mrs. Indira Gandhi was born in Allahabad on 19th November 1917 and was shot dead by her own security guards on 31st October 1984.

Mr.Morarji Desai was the Prime Minister of India from 24th March 1977 to 28th July 1979, being the first Non-congress Prime Minister of India, heading the Janata Party Government. Mr.Desai was born on 29th February 1896 in a village at Gujarath. Mr.Desai died on 10th April 1995, when he was running 100 years of age.

Mr.Charan Singh was the Prime Minister of India from 28th July 1979 to 14th January 1980. Within a few days of his assuming office as the Prime Minister one of the supporting parties withdrew support and Mr.Charan Singh was only a Caretaker PM. Mr. Charan Singh was born on 23rd December 1902 at Meerut and he died in the year 1987.

Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India from 31st October 1984 to 1st December 1989, being the youngest Prime Minister of India at the age of 41 years. Mr.Rajiv Gandhi was born at Mumbai on 20th August 1944 and he died on 21st May 1991 at Sriperumpudur in Tamilnadu, in a human bomb-blast.

Mr. Viswanath Prataph Singh was the Prime Minister of India, form 2nd December 1989 to 10th November 1990, being the head of the Janata Dal Government. Mr.V.P.Singh was born on 25th June 1931. He died very recently on Thursday, 27th November 2008.

Mr.Chandrashekhar was the Prime Minister of India from 10th November 1990 to 21st June 1991. He was born on 1st July 1927 in Ballia district, UP. He died on 8th July 2007.

Mr.Narasimha Rao was the Prime Minister of India from 21st June 1991 to 10th May 1996, being the first Prime Minister from South India.
Mr. Rao was born in Vangara, Karimnagar District, Andhra Pradesh, on 28th June 1921. He died on 23rd December 2004.

Mr.Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of India from for only 16 days from 16th May 1996 to 1st June 1996. Mr. Vajpayee was born on 25th December Gwalior. Mr. Vajpayee was the Prime Minister for the second time from 13th October 1999 to 13th May 2004 when he resigned.

Mr.Gowda was the Prime Minister of India form 1st June 1996 to 21st April 1997. He was born on 18th May 1933 Hassan district, Karnataka.

Mr.Gujral was the Prime Minister of India for 21st April 1997 to 28th November 1997 when he resigned. Mr. Gujral was born on 4th December 1919 in Jhelum, the undivided Punjab which is at present in Pakistan.

Dr.Manmohan Singh is the present Prime Minister of India from 22nd May 2004. Dr. Singh was born on 26th September 1932.
